FAQS

ELECTRICAL SERVICES FAQs

  • What is the difference between two-prong and three-prong plugs?

The third prong on a three-prong plug is for grounding. It has an additional level of protection for the appliance and you from electrical shock. Two-prong plugs just don’t have the same level of protection against electrical shock as three-prong plugs.

  • How can I lower my electric bills?

The easiest thing that you can do is turn off lights and appliances when you are not using them. You can also do things such as replacing your lights with LED lights and replacing outdated home appliances.

  • What is a GFCI?

GFCI stands for ground fault circuit interrupter. These are the electrical outlets that have the “reset” and “test” buttons in the middle of the outlet. It automatically shuts off the current when it detects that the electrical current isn’t flowing correctly.

  • Where do I need a carbon monoxide detector?

In residential dwellings, you need to have a carbon monoxide detector on every level of the home where people live. That generally means every level of the home except the basement. If you have a garage, it will also need a carbon monoxide detector if it is attached to your home. Unattached garages do not need a carbon monoxide detector.

  • How do I reset my tripped breakers?

If the tripped breakers happened soon after you have plugged in some additional appliances, unplug them. Then go to your breaker box and switch your tripped breakers back on.

  • Why are my lights flickering?

Lights flicker for many reasons such as a loose connection, an overloaded circuit, or the wrong bulb type. If your lights flicker throughout your home, it may be a more serious issue.
